FAQs
Can families contribute feedback?
Yes. IKFT Recognized guest feedback and traveler nominations help us identify kids friendly travel excellences for our review and validate our findings. Public input supports the continuous improvement of our independent database.
IKFT Recognized is the sole public trust mark for family friendly hotels. It is a free, independent evaluation based entirely on publicly available data. Hotels are awarded Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum tiers based on their Kidmetrix score. No hotel pays for this badge. IKFT Recognised badges are published in our annual May Edition. Hotels already in the directory are reviewed on the same annual cycle. Hotels not yet assessed can submit for consideration at any time.
What is IKFT Recognized™?
What does a Bronze badge mean?
A Bronze badge means the hotel has passed IKFT's independent family suitability checks. That alone sets it apart most of the 215,000+ hotels and resorts in our initial scan did not qualify for any badge at all. Bronze hotels welcome families. Higher tiers simply reflect a wider range of dedicated kids-specific features. Depending on your family's needs, Bronze may be exactly the right match.
Why do some hotels in the IKFT Directory have different tiers despite having the same star rating?
Because family suitability depends on much more than star classification alone. Two 4★ hotels in the same city may differ significantly in how they accommodate families, one may offer stronger evidence across more Kidmetrix areas than the other. Our algorithm evaluates each property individually within its star class, and the tier reflects the strength and breadth of that evidence. Travel Mode Tags add further context, since the expectations for a Nature & Retreat stay differ from those of a City & Discovery property. Different tiers within the same star class simply mean the evidence tells a different story for each hotel.
How does IKFT use technology in its reviews?
We combine human expertise with digital verification tools, and in later phases AI-assisted data validation. This enables faster updates and consistent accuracy, while every final decision remains human led.
How do you assess a 3 star hotel versus a 5 star hotel?
Excellence is possible at every level. Scoring is calibrated by star category. A 3★ hotel is not expected to match a 5★ resort’s facilities but can still demonstrate strong child comfort, cleanliness, and attentiveness within its class.
Does an IKFT award guarantee I will have a perfect trip?
No. Recognitions are independent guides, not guarantees. We try to help parents, grandparents and guardians but we do not replace them. Each stay depends on many factors beyond our control. They reflect how consistently a hotel demonstrates family suitability and child comfort at the time of review.
How often are the awards updated?
International Kids Friendly Travel publishes one annual Edition each year. The 2026 Inaugural Edition launches in May, with new markets and hotels added on a rolling basis throughout the year as reviews complete. From 2027, all updates, including upgrades and downgrades are published at the annual May Edition only. The sole exception is "Under Review," which can be applied at any time.
What does IKFT Recognized™ mean?
IKFT Recognized indicates that a hotel has been independently reviewed using public and verifiable information available at the time of review. Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum are the only public recognition levels.
IKFT follows a structured market expansion plan. Our initial review scope covers properties in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, and other selected markets, with further expansion planned through 2026–2027. Within each market, our analysts use proprietary research methods to identify 3★, 4★, and 5★ hotels that show consistent family-relevant signals. Not every hotel in a market is reviewed in the first cycle, coverage builds progressively. Families and hotels can help by suggesting properties through our Nominate page, which guides our analysts but does not guarantee recognition.
How does IKFT decide which countries and hotels to review?
Are these awards paid?
No. IKFT Recognized status is free and cannot be purchased. Every badge is based on the same publicly available data sources — no hotel pays for inclusion or tier assignment. Separately, IKFT Advisory Services is a voluntary B2B consultancy that hotels can engage for professional family-readiness guidance. Advisory fees cover consulting resources only and do not influence badge outcomes.
How often are hotels reviewed?
Recognitions remain valid until the next IKFT Edition. During the 2026 inaugural year, the Edition builds progressively as new markets and hotels are added. From 2027, all properties are reevaluated at the annual May Edition, and their status may change if new evidence suggests meaningful updates.
Does a Gold badge mean the same thing in every country?
Not exactly. IKFT assessments are calibrated by both star category and country. Each market has its own family-friendly baseline shaped by local hospitality culture and guest expectations. A Gold badge reflects outstanding family suitability within that hotel's star class and country. This ensures hotels are recognized for excelling within their own market rather than against a single global benchmark.
What does “IKFT” mean?
IKFT stands for International Kids Friendly Travel. It is an independent organization that evaluates and recognizes how well hotels, resorts, and other travel providers meet the real world needs of families with children; from babies to teens, including children with disabilities. Our mission is simple: Kids first, then parents. IKFT promotes genuine, evidence based family hospitality through transparent assessments, tiered recognitions, and practical consultancy, helping the industry build experiences where every child feels welcome.
Can I rely entirely on IKFT badges when booking?
IKFT badges are independent guides, not guarantees. Our assessments are based on information available at the time of review and may contain errors or outdated details. Hotel conditions can change at any time. We recommend verifying key details on the hotel's own website or by contacting the property directly before booking.
Where can I check if a hotel is still current?
Always confirm a property's current status in the IKFT Directory. It is the official registry for IKFT Recognized levels, review dates, and scope notes.
How does IKFT consider accessibility and inclusion?
Accessibility and inclusion are part of every IKFT assessment. We look at how clearly a hotel communicates its accessibility features in its publicly available information for example, whether it mentions step free access, accessible rooms, or facilities for guests with specific needs. Hotels that provide clearer, more detailed accessibility information score more favorably in that area of our assessment. However, IKFT does not verify accessibility features onsite at the Recognized level, and the presence or absence of specific accessibility features varies widely between properties. We strongly encourage families with specific accessibility needs to confirm details directly with the hotel before booking.
Our initial launch covers 27 countries across Europe, North America, and Asia, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, and South Korea.

What are IKFT Kidmetrix™?
What the 250+ checks cover
IKFT Kidmetrix™ are the detailed criteria we use to evaluate how well a hotel supports families and children.
IKFT reviews may draw on 250+ IKFT Kidmetrix™ indicators across practical areas such as for example:
• Arrival & navigation with kids (stroller practicality, family flow)
• Room & sleep practicality (cot readiness, layouts, noise/light comfort)
• Bathrooms & baby/toddler practicality (family routines support)
• Dining comfort for kids (high chairs, kids options, allergy information clarity)
• Play & rest spaces (indoor/outdoor balance, calm zones)
• Pool/leisure family usability (where applicable)
• Accessibility & inclusion usability (step‑free practicality, sensory considerations)
• Staff approach & family readiness (observed service behavior)
We do not publish the full checklist or scoring notes to protect independence and results.
IKFT Kidmetrix™ is the proprietary term we created.
It stands for Kid + metrix = kid metrix = Kidmetrix.
What are the Main IKFT Kidmetrix™?
The seven Main and branches IKFT Kidmetrix™ are an entry framework and typically include signals such as for example:
• Consistent family‑relevant sentiment in guest feedback.
• Clear “good for kids/families” positioning and family‑ready room options feedback in public info.
• Family dining signals (breakfast / restaurant availability and suitability)
• Accessibility & inclusion information clarity
• Operating as a hotel / Resort hotel categories (3★/4★/5★) including superior.
• Evidence of family facilities (e.g., pool/s, play areas, babysitting, kids clubs, where applicable)
• Location suitability for families (nature, beaches, parks, family attractions, or practical city/village access)
The stronger the publicly verifiable evidence of family facilities and parent support (e.g., kids activities, babysitting/childcare support, family rooms, stroller‑friendly routes, restaurant kid menu / breakfast options, themed rooms), the higher a Recognized tier a property may reach within its category.
What star levels are included?
IKFT currently reviews only 3★, 4★, and 5★ hotels.
These categories ensure fair comparison within consistent operational standards. Future expansions may include serviced apartments and family lodges.
Is the list of IKFT Kidmetrix™ public?
You can see what we review, but not every technical detail. We share the Main IKFT Kidmetrix™ (7 core review areas) and representative examples from our broader 250+ IKFT Kidmetrix™ to help families understand what we check, from room practicality and dining to accessibility, inclusion, and atmosphere. We do not publish the complete checklist or scoring notes. Keeping that part independent prevents “teaching to the test” and ensures fair, unbiased evaluations across all hotels.
How does the scoring work; why isn’t every point published?
IKFT explains its review method and publishes clear results recognition level, date, and scope notes. Exact weights and pass thresholds remain confidential to protect independence and prevent bias. Scores are scaled by star class and reviewed by our governance panel. Where applicable, a listing may also show a short Prove It summary explaining what was checked and when, without exposing internal scoring methods.
Can I send a donation to IKFT?
No. IKFT does not accept donations or gifts. Our work is funded solely through professional review and advisory services, ensuring full independence and objectivity.
Any attempt to influence IKFT evaluations through payments, gifts, or benefits is strictly prohibited and treated as a serious conflict of interest.
How do you fairly compare a standard 3 star hotel to a luxury 5 star resort?
We evaluate properties fairly based on their official star category. However, our Kidmetrix™ system also considers the live market price. If a 3★ hotel charges premium 5★ prices but does not provide matching family facilities, our evaluation reflects this gap. By factoring in price as a metric, we help families find fair, realistic value for their specific travel budget.
Do you rely on online reviews? What about fake reviews?
No. Fake or incentivized reviews can distort what families see online. IKFT reduces reliance on unverifiable claims by using structured Kidmetrix™ signals, public and verifiable information, and where applicable additional submitted and / or onsite evidence. If credible evidence suggests a listed property no longer meets the standard, status can be suspended while we review.
What are the IKFT Recognized tiers?
IKFT Recognized has four tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each tier reflects a different level of family-friendliness based on the Kidmetrix algorithm score. One badge shape is used for all tiers — there are no visual distinctions between them. Platinum requires two consecutive years at Gold level (earliest possible: May 2028).s
Why isn’t a hotel I know listed in the IKFT Directory?
Possible reasons:
The hotel is outside current scope (IKFT currently focuses on 3★ / 4★ / 5★ hotels in launch markets).
The property has not been reviewed yet in the current cycle and / or there is insufficient public evidence to confirm signals.
The hotel may be listed under a different name/brand, or its status may be Expired or Suspended (shown in the Directory when applicable).
If you believe a property should be considered, you can nominate it here: Nominate.
Nominations guide our analysts but do not guarantee recognition.
Does IKFT consider children of all ages and abilities?
Yes. IKFT evaluates family suitability across childhood from babies and toddlers through to teenagers and includes children with disabilities. What a property offers at each stage naturally varies by its star category, location, and style, which is exactly why different badge tiers and Travel Mode Tags exist. Our Kidmetrix indicators reflect the practical reality of each property rather than expecting every hotel to offer the same features. We work to try to help the families and to improve our audits also with your help.
Are hotels in different countries assessed against the same standard?
IKFT assessments are calibrated by star category and by country and or location. Each market has its own baseline of family friendly standards. A hotel is assessed relative to the standards within its own country and star class. This ensures fair recognition a hotel in Austria is compared to Austrian family hospitality norms, not to those of another market.
